Pune-Kerala Road trip Day 2: Kolhapur to Kasargod: 650 kms.

Didn't sleep well, was up by 6 am. Stepped down for tea with Vj. The weather was perfect. It was pleasant and the air was fresh due to the rains last night.

The tea was better than the weather.

After quick bath, we were ready to have breakfast and start our journey for the day. It was going to be a long one. We had to cover 650 kms to reach Bekal by night. Breakfast was great. Butts and Vivek had misal pav, I had idli and toast butter and Vj had his protein bar. Finally we left at 8:30 am with Butts at the wheel.

Route for the day

The roads were really good and we made excellent progress and reached the Karnataka border faster than expected. The roads got better in Karnataka and we experienced dag---dag---dag---dag--dag--dag--dag--dag-dag-dag-dag-dagdagdag :). The discussions were mostly about what music to play and everyone had comments on every song played. At one point Vj said "if we were all eggs in a basket we would probably be from different birds". Made perfect sense.

Around 2.5 hours from Kolhapur, we took a right from NH4 to join SH1 at Dharwad. SH1 was going to take us to NH17 near Ankola. SH1 took us uphill. The roads started winding too often and so did our moods. I guess it was hunger. I asked them to stop at a small shop to taste the local chikki and chakli. Had 2 chikkis for 2 rupees, skipped the chalki as it looked dangerous and had a banana instead. The chikki was awesome. I had trouble deciphering the language and accent of the shopkeeper, which made me realize that I was far from home. Few kilometers ahead, Butts suddenly braked hard and I noticed that it was a cop who had stopped us. He looked more scared than us as he felt that butts was going to ram into him. He indicated something and asked us to park at the side of the road. On further questioning we came to know that there were 2 huge trailers coming from the opposite side with windmill blades and we would have blocked them on the hairpin bends that lay ahead of us. It was good to see them doing their jobs well. Jai Ho!
Most of the journey on SH1 was through small villages nestled within a forest. After watching a small shrine in the middle of nowhere butts commented that he was amazed how religion had penetrated so deeply in our country. Religion isn't about places, it is about people. There were debates on when and where to break for lunch when a Kamat Hotel-7kms away signboard popped up. I was hungry and was making a fuss about it and sadly we didn't have any snickers. We decided to check it out and stop if it looked ok. SH1 ended finally and we took a left on NH17. Another km down the road lay Kamat. The place looked good and so did the menu. The worst dish on the table was surprisingly the South Indian thali. :)) The winner was North Indian thali and mixed raita. Also let me tell you they don't serve by two. We had another 350 kms to go and a lot would depend upon the traffic and road conditions if we had to make it to Bekal on time.
Though the quality of road on NH17 was not great, we hit upon some beautiful scenery along the highway. There were rivers, beaches, backwaters adjoining the highway. We also took a slight detour to stop by at Murudeshwar Shiva Temple.

It all started going downhill after that. NH17 was not as good as NH4. There was lot of construction work going on in patches and our progress was slow. It only got worse as the traffic started getting heavy as well. By evening we had covered lesser miles than expected and our real personalities started becoming more pronounced. It is said that true test of character is only when things aren't going your way. It was evident that if we wanted to reach Bekal, it wouldn't be before 9:30-10 pm. Slowly everyone started having an opinion about where we should halt for the night. We never realized that we had stopped enjoying the journey and all we were doing was worry about the destination. Vj actually started looking for flights back home. :(( After Kundapura, the roads got better and progress was faster, but it was already dark and driving was difficult. We passed by Udipi, but I have seen more of Udipi in Mumbai than in Udipi. There was not a single coffee shop on the highway and the coffee lovers in the car were thoroughly disappointed.  We passed by Mangalore but it was too dark to notice anything. We finally entered Kerala around 8:30 pm.

The first thing that hit us in kerala was the overpowering presence of Muslims. Every shop or restaurant was either an Arabian Night or Al Khalifa.  Finally after multiple rounds of discussion and evaluating many options we decided to stay back in Kasargod for the night. Vj made a good suggestion to worry about dinner first and lodging second. As per him we were running out of options every passing hour and our chance to get decent veg food would disappear completely after 10 pm as everything would shut down in Kasargod. On his recommendation we decided to try out Indian Coffee House as everything else was a Shalimar or a Noor Jahan. I have been a huge fan of mughalai food and have visited all the good mughalai restaurants in mumbai and pune, however I was in for a shock. As soon as we entered the place, an overpowering smell of meat hit us. The waiter said that they had only paneer and green peas masala available in veg. We were fcukin hungry and decided to order whatever was available. The service was good and the food arrived early. However let me tell you, I am never going to Indian Coffee house ever again. :) I have a sensitive palate and the taste and smell of the food in ICH scarred it. I am going to take that smell and taste to my grave! Everyone else managed to gobble down some parotas, but I had a tough time. The food wasn't bad, but it was different.

We hurriedly paid the bill and started hunting for Hotel Highway Castle. Luckily it was close by and the restaurant was open when we reached. I ordered dal roti and Butts ordered fruit salad with ice-cream. The food was much better, but I had already lost my appetite and didn't enjoy it.  Vj got us a good discount at the hotel and he also managed to find beers for us, but unfortunately they turned out to be KF premiere instead of KF premium. They tasted like piss and my day ended  at a real low. Dude also taught us how to remove glycerol from beer, but that it a story in itself. It may change my life.  While all this happened, we had discussions about skipping going to Munnar as it was a good 11 hours away and we would have to spend most of the day on the road as well. We decided to pick destinations which were 5-6 hours away so that we could take time off the road and do some sightseeing. Tentative destinations that were discussed were Wayanad, Coorg and Ooty.

Is tomorrow going to be a better day?

Quotes of the day:
1. Butts, this is the end of civilization in Kasargod. Beyond this point you wont get any vegetarian food here.
2.  "If we were all eggs in a basket we would probably be from different birds

Pune-Kerala Road trip Day 1: Pune to Kolhapur: 200 kms.

200 whatsapp messages to decide who will pick up whom and from where :)) . Finally it all works out and we meet in Aundh and start the journey by 3:30 pm. The plan is to drive 250 kms and hit Kolhapur by 7-7.30 pm and spend the night there. Dude had been to Goa few weeks back and he already had a hotel in Kolhapur in mind. "Mast place hai, 2500 bucks per room, neat rooms, good food and we wont even have to go inside Kolhapur since it is on the highway" :) The usual sales pitch that anyone of us would fall for :)
Route for the day

So, we start at 3:30 pm and luckily the weather supports us. It starts raining and the heat disappears. Butts as usual is at the wheel and he is driving fast, but he is driving steady. The roads are okayish up to the Katraj bypass after which they are much better. The chatter starts and we start discussing random stuff. Vijay is the most silent and is concentrating on the music humming along. Around 5 pm, we halt at Shirwal at Hotel Shree Ram. The place is famous for its wadapavs as per Butts. The board says "Best Wadapav" and that's what we decide to order along with tea. There is this nepali waiter who surprisingly speaks fcuking fluent and shuddh marathi "Goram goram wada pav pahije tar 2 mint thamba". The wada pavs are fresh and hot and delicious. Dude enquires about "Shabu wada" which turns out to be sabudana wada.") Its a good start. 15 mins later we are back on NH4 and it is still raining and the music is surprisingly groovy.

Having Wada Pavs at Hotel Shree Ram, Shirwal.

Butts being his usual self declares that we will be in Kolhapur by 7:15 pm. It looks tight but the way he is driving we have a chance. The roads are good and the traffic is thin.
NH4: Excellent road quality

We pass by Satara and Karad and reach Hotel Sai International a minute before 7 pm and guess who has a smile on his face :)

Hotel Sai International, Kolhapur

Hotel Sai International, Kolhapur

The first thing that hits me when I am out of the car is the pleasant weather and cool breeze. Kolhapur has been blessed by the rain recently too and it feels fcukin awesome. Its 21 degrees and all I can think of is my monkey cap. The hotel is excellent, its clean and tidy, the rooms are well maintained and its a steal for 2500 bucks. I try to bargain but fail and 2500 it is! We check in and get fresh and order beer and starters.

Butts and Vivek are busy chalking out the route for the next day and it feels good to be away from the action. The food arrives and it is pretty good. We have long conversations about marriage, women, life in Pune and other various topics. It is not a surprise that though we have advice for each other, it is extremely difficult for us to step into each others shoes and imagine what they are going through in life. I as usual talk too much without making much sense, but these guys know me so well that no one interrupts. The main course arrives and disappears fast.
The last conversation before hitting the bed is when to leave next morning. Dude says 6, butts says 7 and I say 8 and Vijay nods for all 3 options. :) We talk for 10 mins on this without coming to a conclusion. Reminds me of office where we discuss when to schedule the next meeting :). by 11 pm all of us have hit the sack.

Quote of the day: There were many contenders..
"Aaj teri baari hai, kal Vijay ki g*** maarenge"
"Butts, usse durr reh, uska tail lights band hai"
"dude, detach yourself".
But the winner is "Failed investments dont mean that you have to stop trying."

Pune-Kerala Road trip Day 5: Mysore to Shimoga: 250 kms.

For a change I woke up a little late, around 7:15 am. Dude was already up and so was Vj. Hotel rooms without open windows give me a groggy feeling when I wake up and I long for fresh air. So we decided to go down for a walk. It was already hot and I was reminded that we were back to the plateau and not in the mountains anymore. A short walk took us to a small, dingy tea shop, where I had 2 glasses of superb tea.

Route for the day

Since Shimoga wasn't too far away, we had decided to take it easy today and leave Mysore by 12 pm. So we had a lengthy breakfast at the JP Mahal: The spread was lavish compared to the other places where we had stayed and the food was pretty good. I had idli, wada, watermelon juice and baked beans on toast. I under ate today to make up for the over eating the previous morning.
Back in the room we had time to kill, so Vj slept and I watched TV. Dude and Butts decided to check out the Mysore Palace and they got ready and left by 11 am. Before leaving for the palace, we zeroed in on Green View Boutique Resort in Shimoga, called them up and blocked 2 rooms. Dude befriended Madhu on the phone and struck a good bargain for us. 2.5k for each room with complimentary breakfast. The 45 min walk and talk theory was on display and I was worried that if he spoke to her for another 5 mins she would give the rooms for free.

We finally checked out of JP palace at 12:15 pm. I wanted to do some shopping so we stopped by at Mysore Silk and handicrafts emporium after some terrible navigation by me where we went round and round the same streets twice. We bought few things from there while VJ shopped at an adjoining bakery. At 1:15 pm we starting hunting for a place for lunch. We stopped by a Kamat Restaurant (ground floor of Nalapad Residency) which was nearby. The food was bad, as bad as bad can be. :( . Dude rated the place -4 and when dude rates food in negative, it has to be really really bad. One thing to remember in Mysore is to carry cash in your pocket as the shops, restaurants and even petrol pumps don't accept cards.

It was 2:30 by the time we finally left from Mysore with Dude at the wheel. Shimoga was 4.5 hours away at 240 kms. Butts was playing the DJ and putting up a good show. Some great songs were being played and we were doing good on time. This is when i dozed off in the car. It is very rare for me to go to sleep inside a car which is in motion, but I guess I am getting older. I woke up to the sweet smell in the car and saw that Butts and Vj were gorging on a sweet that looked more like a pizza. It is called dil-pasand and is supposed to be delicious. The nap did more good than I had imagined and I was feeling fresh. En route around 4 pm, the weather changed for the good. The hot sun gave way to dark clouds. There was a lot of lightning without any rains for a while. After a while there was rumbling thunder and the rain gods smiled. We stopped the car and got outside to the lovely earthy smell of the wet soil. The wind was blowing, there was a slight drizzle and the green expansive plateau around us shimmered and soaked in the rain. I wished out aloud "it would be awesome if technology would be able to save and store smells so we could relive the complete experience over and over again whenever we looked back." Alas, we ll have to make do with only pictures and videos for now!!
I drove expertly for the next few miles and we stopped at a Coffee day and had cappuccinos. I don't know why I ordered a Hazelnut Carat cake, I didn't like it much. It was still drizzling on and off when we left. The next few hours were full of bickering and banter with Butts at his glorious best. He was going one up on every statement and if we were girls we would have offered him our bodies and soul. :) We finally reached Shimoga at 7 pm thanks to some great driving by Dude.
Hotel Green view Boutique, Shimoga
At the hotel we were greeted by the receptionist Shoaib and a strange smell with lots of smoke. Turned out that the hotel had just been fumigated to drive away the mosquitoes. It took a while to check in and by that time each own of us had breathed in tons of that smoke which kind of screwed us up. Once our luggage was taken up, dude and me stepped down to park our car. There was a group of well dressed local girls who were visiting the Rice Bowl restaurant housed within the Green View Boutique hotel. They checked us out and giggled while we threw attitude! :D

The hotel was pretty good for the price being charged. The rooms were neat and you know that its a good place you are getting a minibar for 2.5k. Back in the room we ordered some stuff to eat while the receptionist Shoaib arranged for beer. Pizza, Aloo paratha, french fries, paneer tikka, gobi gulistan arrived and was gobbled up pretty fast. The beer took longer than expected to arrive and by the time it arrived, we were so full that we knew that we were going to drink just for the sake of it without enjoying it. Key takeaways from the trip were discussed and Togetherness was what everyone was looking forward to, apart from having fun. Butts was on a high and it was good to see him free up and state his mind openly. Vj was calculated and measured as usual. Dude looked like he had a lot to say, but didn't want to, as he felt it would not go down too well. I was ok too.. usually I am the one who manages to screw up in such situations, but luckily it didn't happen this time. Guess what Reverse Osmosis actually removes the good minerals from the water, but many people including few Kent experts are unaware of this.
After a lot of talk and a one sided football match (between MU and Spurs) later, we all retired to bed.

Tomorrow is the last day of this trip and we ll be on the road for more than 9 hours and our avenues of having fun are very limited. I want this trip to end on a high. We need a miracle tomorrow and I am sure someone somewhere is listening.

Quotes:

2. C for Chetan,, C for Chamataka
3. Wish we could capture this smell and take it away with us.

Pune-Kerala Road trip Day 4: Wayanad to Coorg to Kushalnagar to Mysore (unintentional) : 250 kms

Finally got a good night's sleep! Woke up at 6:15 am and went out for tea with Vj. Outside, in the lap of nature, the early morning air was pure and it was accompanied by a much needed serenity. The chirping of birds and rustle of leaves whenever the wind blew had a truly calming effect on the mind. No wonder these places charged so much: city life is cruel and people will pay anything to experience this tranquility. The previous day had ended in a high and we wanted to make the most of today.

The property boasted of a 1 km long nature trail created within the premises and we decided to start our day with a hike. There are very few better ways to start your day: the vibrant colors, the fresh air, the company of your best friends and long chats about stupid things. Breakfast followed and the food was so good that I overate: puttu, puri bhaji, idli, omlette, fresh juices. God was being too kind and I hoped it stayed that way today as well.

Route for the day

We left Banasura Hill resort at 12 pm and headed towards Coorg. Coorg was just 3 hours away and the plan was to have a relaxing day amidst the mountains. The drive from Kalpetta to Coorg was awesome. The Nagarhole forest reserve is spectacular, I am actually short on words to describe the journey through the forest.
We crossed over to Karnataka while crossing the reserve and as expected the roads got better. To save on time and not to repeat the earlier days mistake, we had selected our resort upfront on Dude's recommendation:Kabini River lodge. But we made a big mistake by not booking the rooms. The error proved to be costly. 2.5 hours later, we realized through a sign board that we had actually crossed Coorg. The problem happened as there was no mobile network during most of the journey and we were following a preset path shown by maps which would take us to Kabini. Guess what, the map turned out to be wrong, it was taking us to Kabini through a much longer path and it would take us another 1.5 hours to reach there. To make matters worse, Kabini river lodge wasn't answering our phone calls. So we weren't even sure if there would be rooms available or not.
We had two options, to turn back and go to Madikeri or carry on ahead and reach Kabini and take a chance. We decided to turn back. We took the Kushalnagar route as it showed some promising options to have lunch at. It was almost 3 pm and I could hear Vijay's stomach rumble. We also started making calls to resorts in Coorg/Madikeri to check for availability of rooms. This being a long weekend, all good resorts were full. We halted at a CCD and continued with our search for a resort. Despite being the world's worst CCD, Butts got hooked on to the butts of a Tibetan gal. It's time for Butts to get married. Dude found a hotel finally and it looked promising, but it was at some distance and also to the south of Madekeri near Virajpet which meant it would have set us back by a good 1 hour the next day. We were in a dilemma again and new options were discussed. We were 90 kms away from Mysore and our chances of finding a good spot to spend the night were brighter there. So Mysore it was! No one seemed happy with the destination, but it had never been about the destination in the first place.
None of the hotels in Mysore seemed to have a room available as well and our chances of having fun in the night seemed to be diminishing. That is when Vivek hit upon Fortune JP Palace in Mysore which had a garden suite available for 18k. We decided to go for it though it was expensive. Somehow everyone seemed to be on the edge ready to pick a fight as things had not been going our way again. We reached JP palace around 8 pm and all we wanted to do was eat, drink and sleep.
Vj bought a bottle of Teachers 50 and we ordered a few beers. We also ordered paneer tikka, a salad and few aloo parathas. Let me tell you folks, there is nothing better than a cold beer on a shitty evening. Vj got drunk and was extra polite. Rest of us were trying to take care of him. Our conversations got better and better and the sour taste of the evening was washed away by the sweetness of the beer and the quirkiness of the conversations.

Grand plans were made for the next day and everything somehow seemed back on track.
This journey is just like life: it has its own ups and downs, but the beauty is that everyone is together whether its a high or a low.

The joy of listening

I have never been a man of few words..people will vouch for this for sure!

However of late I have discovered that there is so much joy in listening!! Guess who taught me this... my son :)

Silly things

I have noticed that the greatest pleasures of life are many times linked to the silliest of things around you. Or maybe I am built like that...my sense of humor is a tad different from the folks around me..

I like to imitate people. This gives me the power to notice things about people which no one else does. I love it when a person around me pronounces "list" as "leest" or "promotion" as "parmotion"when I am expecting it. This is my way of finding happiness amidst chaos. This is the fuel that keeps me running.

Many folks in office are puzzled when I have a smile on my face during meetings :):)..now you know why!!

Try it.. it is fun!!
