99

Of late the comedy offerings from bollywood have been forgettable and below par. This relative comparison with its peers makes 99 look special.

99 is an ordinary comedy movie with difference. The difference being, an almost perfect cast and some really humorous moments. Though the story and plot are old, but the treatment is fresh. The first 1/2 hr of the movie is confused and messy, but after that the story catches pace and rhythm. The movie is set in Mumbai in the late nineties when mobile phone craze was just catching on. Kunal Khemu and Cyrus Broacha accidentally ram an expensive car which belongs to an underworld gangster cum bookie, Mahesh Manjrekar. To recover his losses, he makes the duo work for him as recovery agents. The fun starts when they are sent to Delhi to recover 20 lacs from Boman Irani. The rest is a maze of intertwined events that leave you asking for more. The dialogues are great (there are some terrific one liners), comic timing of the actors is good and the comedy scenes are pretty well laid out.

As I said the cast is awesome. Boman Irani and Mahesh Manjrekar are splendid. Kunal Khemu is his usual self and so is Cyrus. Soha Ali Khan doesn’t have much screen presence.A special mention to Kuber (Amit Mistry) who has fared extremely well.

So, don’t miss this one!
